Dear Cole,
Some people know what they were in a past life,
but since the age of fourteen I've known what I
was destined to be in this one; a photographer.
I was living in Rochester, NY when I
stumbled across an old ruin that was associated
with George Eastman, and it piqued my interest
enough that I read his biography. There was
something about the story of photography that
resonated with me and before the book was
complete, I knew that I was destined to be a
photographer.
As a young boy I dreamt of
being a "great" photographer, but I'm not sure
what "great" meant to me back then; fame, fortune,
women? (no, that was the unrealized rock star
fantasy!)
For the last month I've been
forced to ask myself: what are my goals, what am I
trying to accomplish and what defines success for
me? As I was pondering this I ran across some
interesting thoughts on success:
"Don't aim for success if you want it;
just do what you love and believe in, and it will
come naturally." David Frost
"I don't know
the key to success, but the key to failure is
trying to please everybody." Bill Cosby
"Some aspects of success seem rather silly
as death approaches." Donald A. Miller
I wonder if one can separate success in
art from success at work and at home. Can we be
successful in one area our lives and a failure in
another? Or is it all rolled up into a single
measure?
Ralph Waldo Emerson said this of
success:
To laugh often and much, to
win the respect of intelligent people and the
affection of children, to earn the appreciation of
honest critics and endure the betrayal of false
friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in
others, to leave the world a bit better, whether
by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed
social condition; to know even one life has
breathed easier because you have lived. This is to
have succeeded! ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
To achieve true success there must be
balance, integrity and a purpose beyond self. I
believe that true success in one area of our life
permeates into every other area.

New Images |
|
(Dark
Reflections, Harper's Ferry, WV)
Since the last newsletter I've
visited Washington DC and also have been on
several Colorado outings. For some reason I
always find myself wandering back to the same
places. For example the above image was taken at
Harper's
Ferry, a place I love to visit every time I
go to Washington, DC.
I also found
myself revisiting a familiar theme this month;
"Fluid Water" as I like to call it. My friend Russ
Martin pointed out that he photographs
moving water with no man-made objects in the
image whereas I often include a spillway or dam.
This must have subconsciously triggered
something in me because I photographed two new
water images this month and they are without man
made objects.
I present nine new images
and as always, I'd love to hear your thoughts
about them.

An Inspirational Video - The Rolling
Exhibition |

(Kevin
Connolly)
What's your excuse?
No time, no money, no direction, no
inspiration, no car, too many family
obligations, working too much, bad weather,
depressed ....or what?
How about no
legs?
Watch
and be humbled.

Portfolio: Circles
|
|
(Ceiling
Lamp, The Stanley Hotel)
My
Circle portfolio idea has moved into the "proof
of concept" stage. I've put together a few
images to give me an idea of what the portfolio
might look like and to help with new ideas.
If it strikes you one way or the other,
please let me know. Sometimes when you're so
close to something, you cannot see it honestly.

Photographers I Admire...Lance
Ramoth |
|
(Lance
Ramoth - Island Bridge)
I met
Lance a couple of years ago through our
photography and I immediately fell in love with
his work. Besides being a great photographer,
Lance is also a very talented programmer. For
some time he has wanted to combine these two
skills and has developed "fotoblur."
Fotoblur is a new and innovative
photography community designed as a place to
exchange, rate, and critique each others work.
What makes fotoblur so different from other
sites is that it targets just the fine art
photography community which means you get
wonderful input and ideas about your work.
I've helped test the site and Lance has
done an amazing job with the programming. It's
light, fast and a delight to use.

The Story Behind the Image
|
|
(The
Photographer's Son, Johnstown, CO)
My son Jem and I were driving home
when I saw this abandoned house and made a quick
exit from the freeway. Jem immediately let out
the groan that means: "No, no, no, don't stop!
I'd rather be home picking up dog poop than be
sitting in the car waiting for you!"
I
did the only thing I could do; I lied and
assured him that I'd only be a few minutes
(after about 8 years old they stop falling for
that one).
I was standing on top of the
truck photographing the chimney when I noticed
how clearly I could see our shadow on the house.
I was taken by the image of Jem waiting so
patiently and anxiously for me.
The
image reminded me of all of the trips he had
taken with me, enduring the curse of the
"photographer's son."
