Dear Cole,

During the last two months, we have had record cold and snow here in Colorado. The silver lining is that it's been extraordinarily beautiful, so much so that everyone says "what a great opportunity to take some snow shots!"

But as you might have noticed, my style tends towards dark images, so I really didn't get out that much (and the temperatures being under 10 degrees didn't motivate me either!). However I did create a few "snow shots" and here they are.

My trip this month was to rural Missouri and Kansas, I always enjoy driving the back roads and exploring. One thing that I noticed on this trip was how many abandoned farm houses I found. I literally saw hundreds as I drove the country side. I went inside many of them and it was eerie to see empty rooms, abandoned furniture and personal belongings left behind. It made me think about the lives that had been lived in those homes and I wondered what had become of those people and their dreams.

I'm not sure what it all means, if it's good or bad, but it caused me to think a great deal about life and what's it all about.

I hope this newsletter finds you well. If you get a moment, I'd love to hear from you. You can't imagine how encouraging it is to hear from people and I always enjoy learning what is going on with other people's art and lives.

Cole

New Images From Missouri and Kansas

Dock and Frozen Pond

Just last week I was able to spend a week in Missouri and Kansas and was able to devote three days to creating new images.

The above image is entitled "Dock and Frozen Pond" and is one of the new images. I thought Colorado was cold these last few weeks, but it was cold and humid back in Missouri! I could only shoot for a few minutes before having to return to the car to warm up.

I brought home six new images and only time and public opinion will tell if any of them are worthy of further pursuit. As I have mentioned before, it takes me some time to finally decide if I like a new image or not. Your input is always valuable and sometimes "very interesting!"

"One on One" Solo Show - Extended by 100%!!!

Trees at Dusk

My one day solo show "One on One" was extended by 100%! Instead of being open just one day, it was open two!!! (big smile)

In those two days I saw old friends and met a lot of new ones. It was a great experience and I'd like to thank everyone who came by. We had about 225 people attend, despite the marginal weather.

My special thanks to Cindy and Larry at The Center for Fine Art Photography. Without their support and help, I would not have had this opportunity. Thank you.

If you have not yet visited The Center, please check out their website and consider submitting work to one of their juried shows. It was at The Center that I had my first piece accepted and displayed, "Windmill in Moonlight."

Now Appearing...

Bridge Supports

Here is what's happening with my work:

The Santa Fe Prize for Photography - I was nominated for The Fifth Annual Santa Fe Prize for Photography. This recognizes a gifted and committed photographer who has completed, or is near completion of, a meaningful body of work. This prize was initiated to bring new work to light and the award process is by nomination only.

Honorable Mention, The Bernice Abbott Prize - From the Julia Dean Gallery in Los Angeles. Berenice Abbott was a photographer of great accomplishment. Known mostly for her documentary work of New York City in the 1930's, Berenice was also a portrait photographer, an educator, an inventor, and a writer. She believed that all photographers should have personal projects that they are passionate about, no matter what the subject matter. This award is in her honor and is meant for someone who has completed a body of work.

My image Railroad Tracks was rented to the movie "Catch and Release" which is currently showing in theaters. I've not seen the movie yet and so I don't know if it appears, so if you go please look for it!

I was invited to attend "Review Santa Fe." Review Santa Fe is the only juried portfolio review event in the United States. Up to 100 photographers are selected to participate in two days of reviews with esteemed curators, editors, art directors, publishers, gallery and agency reps.

American Photo Magazine, Special Edition - My image "Isolated" was chosen as one of the Images of the Year.

Classical, Contemporary and Conceptual: A Photographic Triptych. This is a show with two of my friends, Vered and Ira Galor, at the Poudre River Art Center from Friday 2/23 through Friday 3/2.

"Geometry" at the Flash Gallery, Denver. Two of my images are in this juried show, White Wash and The Corner of the Pier

How I Created This Image...

Rocks and Mist

"Rocks and Mist" was taken at La Jolla Cove in San Diego. It is a favorite spot of mine, one where I spent many days diving and spending time with family and friends. And now, a location in which many of my favorite images were created.

Rocks and Mist was taken near midnight and uses a 30 second exposure to capture the waves moving in and out amongst the rocks. This long exposure gives a mist like appearance to the water.

Adjusting the exposure from 30 to 15 to 5 seconds can change the look of the water dramatically. Fortunately with digital, you are able to see your results and keep trying if you don't get it right.

This image took many exposures to get it just right. For a 30 second exposure you must remain very still and some of the big breakers would shake the rock I was standing on. Several times I had to scramble to save my equipment from being either drenched or drug into the ocean.

Then in the digital darkroom I work to emphasize the highlights in the moving water by using dodging. This is a darkroom process with an equivalent in PhotoShop whereby you can lighten a specific area, such as the waves moving in and out between the rocks.

This movement in the water is what I call "fluid water" and it is a look that I often employ when photographing water.
