Dear Cole,

I've just returned from a 10 day road trip that went from Laporte to Durango to Santa Fe to Durango and back to Laporte. I love driving and the weather could not have been more spectacular.

On the way to Durango I encountered thunderstorms, rain, hail and snow! On the way back I had beautifully clear skies with storm clouds that gathered in the late afternoon. It was on one of these afternoons that I was nearly struck by lightening as I photographed clouds!

What took me on this journey was a portfolio review in Santa Fe and a Gallery Opening in Durango. Both events were wonderful and I learned a great deal.

I was fortunate in that I had plenty of time to create new images while on this trip. These images are only hours old and so new that I am not sure how I feel about them yet. It usually takes me several weeks before I am able to sort it all out.

One thing these images do remind me of, is how lucky we are to live in such a vast, varied and beautiful country. America is incredibly beautiful!

Cole

New Images From Santa Fe and Durango

Two Sheep

(Two Sheep - Cuba, NM - 2007)

I can now say that I've been to Cuba.

My friend Wayne and I stayed at the nicest motel in Cuba, New Mexico (there were only two) and I do not exaggerate when I say it was a "One Star" motel.

While in Cuba, Wayne wanted to visit the Contential Divide Trail and so we drove up several miles to the trailhead. It had been raining and we were a bit concerned about going further because of the muddy roads, so we turned around. However, as we turned around I became stuck in the mud and thus began our small adventure in Cuba, NM.

After some help and advice from a UPS driver, we got unstuck and back on the road. However it turned out that I had sheared some wheel weights and the truck was shaking so badly we had to turn around and find an auto repair back in Cuba.

We found a small shop but he was so busy that we had to do most of the work outselves! With the wheel balanced, we were back on the road when I discovered that the truck was still shaking from all of the mud that was stuck to the other wheels.

We were far enough out of town that we decided to just pull over, take off wheels and remove the mud ourselves. After a short time we were finially back on the road and running smoothly again.

So now I can say that I've been to Cuba.

The Open Shutter Gallery in Durango, CO

Open Shutter Gallery

(Hey! How'd this color picture get in here?)

On Friday May 25th, I had the pleasure of attending the opening of my new exhibition at the Open Shutter Gallery in Durango. The show is entitled "classic images in black & white" and runs through July 15th.

It was my first time in Durango and I was very impressed, for a small town of 17,000 they have quite an active artist community. The Open Shutter Gallery is dedicated to photography and has attracted many important names including Phil Borges, Lois Greenfield and P. Sammallahti.

If you are in the area this summer, please stop by and visit with Margy the owner, Brandon and Bob. It is a beautiful gallery and these folks could not be more friendly and helpful. They have a great selection in the main gallery, but be sure to ask if you can see the works in the "back room."
