A new year, new images and new possibilities!
New Images From San Diego ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In December I made a quick trip to San Diego and was able to see my two sons as well as produce some new work. Each time I visit Southern California, I gravitate towards La Jolla Cove which is a favorite dive spot for me and the family. But on this trip, I only made it as far as Crystal Beach. As I passed the pier, the fog and sun wrestled for possession and sparked my imagination. Changing conditions means two things for a photographer, new opportunities and limited time! The day was excellent and I created several new images, some of which are more minimalist than my previous work. Some people love them while others just give me that "I don't get it" look. You be the judge and let me know how you feel about them.
Images From Laporte, Loveland and Laramie ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ During the last several months I had been spending so much time taking care of the "business" of art, that I had not been doing what I really love, creating new images. So I decided that I needed to try and get out every day, even if it was only for 15 minutes at a time, and get back in the habit of "seeing." I believe that the more you "look" the more you "see." And when you are able to see, ordinary objects can take on new and different meanings. Seeing is like muscle tone, you have to build it up and once you have it, you can lose it if you stop exercising it. So I've been making more time and it's helping. I am starting to see better and am creating some new and different work. These images are from outings around my hometown of Laporte, the neighboring city of Loveland and up in Laramie, Wyoming.
Now Appearing in Galleries and Print... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ While attending a workshop at the Santa Fe Center for Photography, I met a very nice photographer named Christina Mittermeier. She suggested that I might send some of my work to the Black & White Spider Awards out of London. After some research I was convinced that I would like to submit work and sent in 10 images, of which:

How I Created This Image ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sometimes you work so hard to create an image and it just doesn't come together. And at other times, it happens easily. Such was my luck on November 1st, 2004. I was walking along the Poudre River when I spotted this collection of bones and knew immediately that I had something special. I was captivated by the way the bones were arranged and how they contrasted against the autumn leaves. It took only minutes and the shot was complete. However it took a great deal more work in the digital darkroom before the image was complete. I spent dozens of hours burning in the leaves to darken them and lightening the bones so that they popped out of the image. It took me 18 months until I was fully satisfied with it. This image is titled "Skeleton" and it's one of my favorites. I am always asked if I arranged the bones; I did not. I am also asked if I know what type of animal this is; I do not. But, if anyone could help me identify it, I would be grateful. I suspect it is the bones of more than one animal as there seems to be too many parts. Also, there is no skull in the image, the pelvis is what appears to be the head. Some people find this image a bit gruesome but I see beauty in its form.
Survey for My Upcoming Book ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A local Colorado publisher, E6STOCK, will be a producing a small book with 27 of my images. It's size is 5.5X8.5 inches and will sell for $7.95 I now have the task of narrowing my work down to just 27 images. Do I include my favorites or perhaps the images that have been in exhibitions? Maybe I should include images that have sold well. Can I get your input, as you are familiar with my work. It is a survey of sorts. I have narrowed down the choice to 40 images. Would you help out by looking at them and letting me know which 10 you think I should include?
