Dear Cole,

This month I spent a week in Kentucky and Ohio where I was able to use my GPS to keep me off the highways and onto the back roads. There is nothing more enjoyable than driving along at dusk and watching the fireflies!

I've added some new work from my trip and have also complied some images on the Colorado's cottonwoods in the winter.

And if you remember, last month I created a color piece and asked if you thought I should pursue color or stick with Black and White. Before I tell you what everyone thought, I must show you what my fortune cookie recently said:

"You are an artistic person - Let your colors show."

I have decided to ignore the fortune cookie and to follow everyone else's almost unanimous advice: I will be sticking with Black and White. However I do appreciate everyone's comments on my "Gay Houses." Thank you!

Cole

Abandoned Doll This month I spent several days driving the back roads of Ohio. When the freeways were built in the 50's and 60', these roads were abandoned and became almost invisible to the cross country traveller.

This is beautiful farming country with green fields and tall corn. I drove through small towns where children still ride their bikes to the market to buy candy. Frequently I saw marks on the roads from the metal rims of Amish horse drawn wagons.

But there is also something disturbing as you drive these back roads. The roads are eerily vacant and abandoned farm homes and barns are decaying at an alarming rate.

Is this simply progress marching through the back roads of Ohio or is an important part of our heritage disappearing?

Cottonwood and Storm To me, there is nothing more interesting or photogenic than Colorado's cottonwoods in the winter. They are large, gnarled giants that look down upon us humans as if we were ants.

The world hurries by and they just watch.

P.S. My friend and fellow photographer Dick Hutson will correct me if I have mistakenly identified any of these trees as cottonwoods! He really knows his plants and teaches me every time I try to identify something!
