In this issue I will introduce several new images, some taken a few
weeks back and some taken as recently as last week during my trip to
Virginia and West Virginia. It was a wonderful trip with the autumn colors
almost at their peak, however reds and yellows are best left to the color
photographers! Cole | |
New Images - The High School Yearbook Photo ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A few weeks back I received a call from a mother who had seen my work in The Sun, a poetry/short story/photography magazine. She lived close by and wanted to know if I would consider taking her daughter's yearbook photo because she didn't want a traditional "portrait." I explained that I was not that type of photographer but was curious as to what the daughter was looking for and so arranged to meet her. It turns out that Ingrid was delightful and that she was looking for something unusual and in b&w. I had been interested in trying portraiture for some time and thought this would be a great opportunity for the both of us. However I warned both Mom and Ingrid that while I would be happy to try, they must leave time for a backup plan in case they didn't like the images! Ingrid and I went to a nearby field that had some wonderful old dead trees and we tried a few shots. While we were shooting, Ingrid noticed a herd of cows in the distance, they were watching us and starting to inching closer. I could tell that Ingrid was nervous that they might be coming our way and foolishly boasted that I could call cows. I let off a few "moooooo's" and the cows quickly ran over and surrounded us. Cows are curious by nature and soon they were only inches away, licking Ingrid and chewing on my clothing. It was a funny experience! And the results of this photographic experiment? Ingrid was happy with the images and several made me laugh, but is this art or simply an unusual senior portrait? I have had many conversations with my friends on this subject and have come to the conclusion that it just doesn't matter. I enjoyed creating these images and if you like them, wonderful!
My Southern Colorado Trip - September 2006 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Last month I took a short trip to Southern Colorado with my son Jem and friend Wayne. Though short, I was able to add several new images to my collection, including two additions to my "Fluid Water" portfolio.

Can You Tell a Digital Photograph From a Film Photograph? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can you tell a digital photograph from a film photograph? I began working in the darkroom in 1968, at the age of 14. I have spent many thousands of hours creating images with film and since 2004, with digital. I have seen excellent work created with both film and digital. In my humble opinion, the only thing that really matters is how you feel about the art. When you look at it, does it excite you? Do you want to take it home with you? P.S. Can you tell which of the above images were created with film and which with digital? Click here to see a larger version.
